The things to be aware of when driving in the United States of America if you are used to driving in the United Kingdom. This goes with my driving blog at: https://www.bodyguardsdriving.co.uk/section783077_390591.html #drivingintheUS #safedriving #drivingontheright #spaceandtime

I drove in the US in 1993 aged 18. I flew out recently in 2025 and I was watching how you turn right on a red light if it is clear on the left.

I watched this a number of times to make sure that I was absolutely certain of what was going on.

It is really important to give yourself space and time, don't rush.

I used the visual trigger of the steering wheel located on the left as a reminder that we are driving on the right, so almost every time I saw the steering wheel or thought about it, it would remind me to check I am driving on the right.

Try and get eye contact or be ready to get eye contact to apologise for making a mistake.

We went to pick the hire car up and we were going to see some alligators in the wild after this.

It would be easy to try and keep up, but the most important aspect is to keep yourself safe.

So it is driving the wrong way safely. It is far better to lose the person you are following than to have a collision.

The mental focus on keeping safe has to be at the top of the list.

The mental focus to keep up needs to be way lower down on your list of priorities and be ready to be dumped at the slightest reason to focus on being safe.

I did order a SatNav on the hire vehicle but as I wanted the smallest car (I love small cars) it didn't have one and so my son held the phone so we could know where we are going.

I wanted to do this when I was on holiday so that there would be no pressure, the idea being that in a more pressing situation I would be able to drive well and with more confidence.
